Buhoma Sector

Mgahinga is ideal for visitors looking for fewer crowds, volcanic scenery and the opportunity to combine gorilla trekking with golden monkey tracking or mountain hiking.

What Is the Difference Between Gorilla Tracking and Gorilla Habituation?

Standard gorilla tracking normally allows visitors to spend up to one hour with a habituated mountain gorilla family after locating it.

The Gorilla Habituation Experience offers a longer encounter with a gorilla group undergoing habituation. Visitors accompany researchers, trackers and conservation personnel and may spend up to four hours with the gorillas once they are located.

The habituation experience is available in the southern part of Bwindi, subject to permit availability and conservation arrangements.

How Do I Reach Uganda’s Gorilla Trekking Areas?

Gorilla trekking destinations can be reached by road or domestic flight.

From Entebbe or Kampala

The road journey to Bwindi or Mgahinga usually takes approximately eight to ten hours, depending on the trekking sector, traffic and road conditions.

Many visitors break the journey with stops at:

• The Equator
• Lake Mburo National Park
• Queen Elizabeth National Park
• Lake Bunyonyi

Domestic flights are also available from Entebbe to airstrips such as Kihihi and Kisoro. A road transfer is then arranged from the airstrip to the lodge.

From Kigali, Rwanda

Southern Bwindi and Mgahinga can be reached from Kigali by road through the Cyanika or Katuna border crossing. The journey normally takes approximately four to six hours, depending on the destination, border procedures and traffic.

Travellers must have the correct visas and travel documents for both Rwanda and Uganda.

When Is the Best Time to Track Gorillas in Uganda?

Gorilla trekking is available throughout the year. However, the drier periods are generally considered the most convenient:

• June to September
• December to February

During these months, forest trails may be less muddy and easier to navigate. Gorilla tracking is still possible during the wetter months, and these periods often provide greener scenery and fewer visitors.

Bwindi is a tropical rainforest, so rain can occur at any time of the year.

What Do I Need for Gorilla Tracking?

Visitors should prepare for humid forest conditions, steep slopes and potentially muddy trails. Recommended items include:

• Waterproof hiking boots
• Long trousers
• A long-sleeved shirt
• Gardening gloves
• A lightweight rain jacket
• Insect repellent
• Drinking water
• A small backpack
• Camera with spare batteries
• Gaiters for muddy conditions

Hiring a local porter is highly recommended. Porters can carry your backpack and assist you along difficult sections of the trail. Using a porter also directly supports families living around the national park.

Gorilla Trekking Rules

To protect both visitors and the gorillas, trekkers must follow the instructions given by park rangers. Important rules include:

• Maintain the required distance from the gorillas
• Avoid flash photography
• Keep voices low
• Do not eat or drink near the gorillas
• Follow the ranger’s instructions
• Do not trek when suffering from a contagious illness
• Avoid touching the gorillas
• Remain with your assigned trekking group

Mountain gorillas share much of their genetic material with humans and can be vulnerable to human illnesses.

Do I Need a Gorilla Permit?

Yes. Every visitor must have a valid gorilla permit issued for a particular date and trekking location. Permits are limited and can sell out several months in advance, especially during the peak travel seasons.
