Update for Arriving U.S. Citizens:
The Government of Uganda changed its entry requirements effective 1 May. Country Categories have changed, and new requirements may apply to travelers arriving from those countries. See the Actions to Take section below.
The Government of Uganda is encouraging all travelers from the United States (and all Category 2 countries, which also include the United Kingdom, UAE, Turkey, South Africa, Ethiopia, South Sudan, and Tanzania) to postpone any non-essential travel to Uganda.
Any traveler from the Category 2 countries, including the United States, will be subjected to a PCR COVID-19 test, at the traveler’s expense, at all points of entry into Uganda, including Entebbe International Airport. These travelers will have to wait for their negative results before proceeding to their final destination in Uganda, which may necessitate a stay at a hotel in proximity to Entebbe International Airport.
Individuals who have received a full COVID-19 vaccination and are asymptomatic will be allowed into Uganda without the need for testing on arrival. Such travelers will need to show evidence of their vaccination. The Government of Uganda strongly recommends that non-Ugandans and non-resident foreigners from the Category 2 countries who are not vaccinated do not travel to Uganda at this time.
Note that all passengers originating from India (Category 1 country) are currently banned from entering Uganda, regardless of the route of travel. Any traveler who was present in, or travelled through, India in the 14 days preceding their arrival in Uganda will not be allowed entry.
The Government of Uganda will review their list of Category 1 and 2 countries and restrictions on a weekly basis. For the most up to date information, please visit the Government of Uganda COVID-19 website.
Travel Advisory Remains at Level 3: Reconsider Travel
The Department of State maintains a Level 3 Travel Advisory for Uganda recommending that travelers reconsider travel to Uganda due to COVID-19. The number of COVID-19 cases continues to rise in Uganda. Travelers in Uganda should exercise increased caution due to crime and kidnapping.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) maintains a Level 1 Travel Notice for Uganda. CDC recommends travelers get fully vaccinated before traveling to Uganda. Travelers at increased risk for severe illness from COVID-19 should consider postponing all travel, including essential travel, to Uganda. Medical care resources in Uganda are limited.
Consular Services:
The consular section at U.S. Embassy Kampala is offering routine passport appointments, notarial services, and appointments for applications of Consular Reports of Birth Abroad (CRBA). To schedule a passport or notarial appointment, please visit our website. To qualify for a CRBA appointment, you must first be documentarily ready for interview. To submit your documents for review, please email [email protected]. CRBA appointments are being scheduled for those who are already documentarily ready in chronological order of receipt.
Visa Processing Remains Suspended:
The consular section is prioritizing services for U.S. citizens. Routine visa processing remains suspended, but we continue to provide as many appointments as local conditions, resources, and safety considerations allow for emergencies and in mission-critical visa categories, including a limited number of appointments for petition-based employment visas, student visas, and exchange visitor visas. We encourage all applicants to be mindful of the constraints and apply early. We will resume regular visa processing as soon as possible but are unable at this time to provide a specific date on which such services will be available.
