Uganda Shakes Up Primate Tourism with New Low-Season Pricing and Booking Overhaul

In a significant move aimed at boosting off-peak travel and streamlining operations, the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) has announced a series of major updates to its permit pricing and booking procedures. The changes, detailed in a stakeholder letter from Executive Director Dr. James Musinguzi on February 26, 2026, include the immediate introduction of discounted low-season permits, a revised tariff structure set for 2027, and the suspension of the long-standing seven-day reservation window.

Unlocking Value in the Low Season

In a bid to stimulate travel during quieter months, UWA has introduced discounted “Low Season Permits” for its flagship primate tracking experiences. The new rates, effective immediately, apply to the months of April, May, and November.

Under the new structure, the cost for gorilla tracking is reduced to $500 for Foreign Residents and $600 for Foreign Non-Residents. Chimpanzee tracking will also see a discount, priced at $150 for Foreign Residents and $200 for Foreign Non-Residents.

These rates are designed to attract visitors during the traditional low season, offering a more affordable way to experience Uganda’s world-renowned primates without the crowds. However, UWA has noted that these special low-season permits are non-transferable and cannot be rescheduled, emphasizing their role in filling a specific period in the tourism calendar.

A Look Ahead: Revised Tariffs for 2027

Looking further ahead, UWA has unveiled a comprehensive revision of its tariff structure, which is scheduled to take effect on January 1, 2027. While the new low-season rates offer a temporary discount, the 2027 tariffs reflect updated pricing across a wide range of activities.

Key changes in the 2027 structure include:

  • Gorilla Tracking: The standard permit price will reamain at $800 for Foreign Non-Residents and $700 for Foreign Residents.

  • Gorilla Habituation: The premium experience of spending more time with gorillas during their habituation will be priced at $1,800 for Foreign Non-Residents and $1,600 for Foreign Residents.

  • Chimpanzee Experiences: Tracking in Kibale National Park (KNP) will be $300 for Foreign Non-Residents, while the habituation experience will be $400. A separate, more accessible rate for chimpanzee tracking in Kyambura Gorge has been set at $200.

  • Specialized Activities: The new tariff list also includes pricing for specialized offerings like Experiential Lion Tracking ($500), a 5-day Golden Cat tracking experience in KNP ($350), and various guided walks.

The detailed 2027 table also outlines rates for the Rest of Africa (ROA) and East African Community (EAC) citizens, showcasing a tiered approach to pricing.

Major Shift: “Pay and Book” Replaces the 7-Day Window

Perhaps the most immediately impactful operational change is the suspension of the seven-day reservation window, effective March 1, 2026.

Previously, tour operators could reserve permits for up to a week without payment, giving them time to confirm client bookings. Under the new system, permits will only be secured upon full payment at the time of booking. The system will complete the transaction instantly, eliminating the previous “hold” period where unpaid reservations would eventually be cancelled.

UWA stated that this measure is intended to enhance fairness, transparency, and permit availability. “This will ensure that permits remain accessible to operators with confirmed clients, ultimately allowing more efficient planning and equitable access across the industry,” the letter read. The move is expected to prevent permits from being block-booked without immediate commitment, making them more readily available for travelers with confirmed plans.

These comprehensive changes underscore UWA’s dual commitment to sustainable conservation financing and improving the visitor experience. By offering low-season incentives and ensuring a more transparent booking system, Uganda is reinforcing its position as a premier destination for primate tourism, encouraging visitors to “Conserve for Generations” while securing their permits for the adventure of a lifetime.
