UWA successfully translocates 19 Giraffes

Uganda Wildlife Authority successfully concluded giraffe translocation in Murchison Falls National Park. During this translocation, 19 giraffes (13 females, 6 males) were released. Two female giraffes were also moved to (Uganda Wildlife Education Center) UWEC,  Entebbe for conservation education purposes.

The exercise which  commenced on 8th of August and ended on 22nd August 2017,  was the second phase of giraffe translocation to southern bank of River Nile, carried out by Uganda Wildlife Authority with funding from Giraffe Conservation Foundation, USA. The first phase captured and released 17 giraffes successfully

The overall aim of the translocation project is to establish a viable population of free-ranging Rothschild (Nubian) giraffe in the southern bank of River Nile in Murchison Falls National Park.

During capture, there was high consideration to animal welfare requirements and selection of individual giraffes was appraised by two or three veterinary professionals.
