Buhoma is located in the northern part of Bwindi and is the park’s best-known trekking sector. It was the first area in Uganda where tourists officially tracked mountain gorillas, beginning in 1993.

Unlike the standard trek, which generally allows visitors one hour with a fully habituated gorilla family, the habituation experience permits up to four hours with a family undergoing habituation, subject to the official programme and availability. It is particularly attractive to wildlife photographers and visitors who want a longer, more immersive forest experience.
The sector combines well with Lake Mutanda, Mgahinga Gorilla National Park and journeys starting or ending in Kigali, Rwanda.

Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is Uganda’s smallest national park, but it offers one of the country’s most scenic gorilla experiences. The park protects the Ugandan slopes of the Virunga volcanoes and forms part of a transboundary ecosystem shared with Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Gorilla trekking begins near Ntebeko, outside Kisoro. Mgahinga usually offers trekking to the Nyakagezi gorilla family, subject to the family’s location and official park arrangements. The trail passes through bamboo forest and volcanic landscapes beneath Mount Muhabura, Mount Gahinga and Mount Sabyinyo.
Mgahinga is especially attractive for travellers who prefer a quieter park or want to combine gorilla trekking with golden monkey tracking, volcano hiking or Batwa cultural experiences. What Happens During a Gorilla Trek?
The experience begins early in the morning at the park headquarters. Uganda Wildlife Authority rangers provide a briefing about forest safety, gorilla behaviour and trekking rules. Guests are then divided into small groups and assigned to a habituated gorilla family.
The trek may take from a few hours to most of the day, depending on the gorillas’ movements, terrain and weather. Once the family is located, standard permit holders normally spend up to one unforgettable hour observing the gorillas. Guests should follow the ranger’s instructions, remain calm, avoid flash photography and keep the required distance.
No two treks are the same. The uncertainty is part of the adventure: trackers and rangers follow signs such as nests, footprints, broken vegetation and feeding remains through the forest.
Gorilla Permits and Booking
A valid Uganda Wildlife Authority permit is required for every trek. Permit fees and regulations can change, so travellers should confirm the current official rate when booking. Permits are limited for each gorilla family and can sell out months in advance, especially during the popular travel seasons of June to September and December to February.

What to Pack for Gorilla Trekking
The rainforest can be wet, muddy and steep at any time of year. We recommend bringing:
- Strong, waterproof hiking shoes with good grip

- Gardening gloves for holding vegetation
- A lightweight waterproof jacket or poncho
- A small backpack with drinking water and packed lunch
- Insect repellent and sunscreen

- Walking poles, which are often available at the trailhead
Hiring a local porter is highly recommended. A porter can carry your bag and assist on difficult sections of the trail, while your payment directly supports households living around the park.
Best Time to Track Gorillas in Uganda
Gorilla trekking is available throughout the year. The drier periods—generally June to September and December to February—often provide easier trail conditions. The wetter months bring greener scenery, fewer visitors and excellent photographic atmosphere, but paths can be more slippery.
Because Uganda’s mountain forests have their own microclimate, rain can fall in any month. Good footwear and waterproof clothing are always essential.
