Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

Bwindi is Uganda’s most famous gorilla destination and is home to several habituated mountain gorilla families. Trekking takes place in four main sectors:

• Buhoma

• Ruhija

• Rushaga

• Nkuringo

Each sector has its own park headquarters, gorilla families and accommodation options. It is important to stay near the sector indicated on your permit, as travelling between sectors can take several hours.

A Uganda gorilla trekking permit for a foreign non-resident currently costs USD 800 per person. The permit includes park entry, professional ranger guidance and up to one hour with a habituated gorilla family.

Mgahinga Gorilla National Park

Mgahinga lies in southwestern Uganda and forms part of the Virunga Conservation Area. The park offers a beautiful trekking environment of bamboo forest, montane vegetation and volcanic scenery.

Gorilla Habituation in Uganda

Uganda is currently the only country offering a formal four-hour gorilla habituation experience to tourists.

The activity takes place in the Rushaga sector of southern Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. Participants enter the forest early in the morning and accompany researchers, rangers and trackers searching for a gorilla family that is still becoming accustomed to humans.

A gorilla habituation permit for a foreign non-resident currently costs USD 1,500 per person. Only four visitors are normally permitted to join each group, so availability is limited.

The four-hour period begins after the gorillas have been located. When trekking and tracking time are included, the complete experience can occupy most of the day.

Gorilla Trekking in Rwanda

Gorilla trekking in Rwanda takes place in Volcanoes National Park, approximately two and a half hours by road from Kigali.

A Rwanda gorilla trekking permit currently costs USD 1,500 per person and allows visitors to spend up to one hour with a fully habituated gorilla family.

Is Gorilla Habituation Available in Rwanda?

Rwanda does not currently offer a public four-hour gorilla habituation experience. All regular gorilla visits in Volcanoes National Park provide up to one hour with a fully habituated family.

How Difficult Is Gorilla Trekking?
