Travelling from the USA to Uganda

Uganda is one of Africa’s most rewarding destinations for American travellers. Known as the Pearl of Africa, the country offers unforgettable mountain gorilla encounters, chimpanzee trekking, classic wildlife safaris, spectacular waterfalls, beautiful lakes and warm cultural experiences—all within one journey.

If you are planning to travel from the United States to Uganda, Ngoni Safaris can help you turn a long international trip into a smooth, carefully organised adventure. From airport arrival and visa guidance to private transport, accommodation, wildlife permits and expert safari guides, we take care of the details while you enjoy Uganda.

Why Visit Uganda from the USA?

Uganda is ideal for travellers who want more than a traditional safari. In a single holiday, you can:

  • Trek mountain gorillas in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park or Mgahinga Gorilla National Park
  • Track chimpanzees in Kibale Forest National Park
  • See lions, elephants, giraffes, buffaloes, leopards and hippos on game drives
  • Cruise the Kazinga Channel or the River Nile
  • Visit the powerful Murchison Falls
  • Search for tree-climbing lions in the Ishasha sector of Queen Elizabeth National Park
  • Track rhinos on foot at Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary
  • Look for the prehistoric-looking shoebill in Mabamba Swamp
  • Relax beside Lake Bunyonyi or the River Nile
  • Meet local communities and discover Uganda’s rich cultures and traditions

Uganda’s combination of primates, savannah wildlife, scenery and hospitality makes it an excellent choice for couples, families, solo travellers, photographers, honeymooners and private groups from the United States.

Flying from the USA to Uganda

Most international visitors arrive at Entebbe International Airport (EBB), located near Lake Victoria and approximately 40 kilometres from Kampala.

There are generally no nonstop commercial flights between the United States and Uganda, so travellers usually connect through a major international hub. Common routings may pass through cities such as Amsterdam, Brussels, Doha, Dubai, Istanbul, Addis Ababa or Nairobi, depending on the departure city, airline and current schedule.

Travellers may begin their journey from major U.S. airports such as New York, Washington D.C., Atlanta, Chicago, Boston, Dallas, Houston, Los Angeles or San Francisco. Because schedules and transit requirements can change, compare the total travel time, baggage allowance, length of connection and whether a transit visa is needed before purchasing a ticket.

Ngoni Safaris can arrange a personal meet-and-greet at Entebbe International Airport and transfer you to your hotel in Entebbe or Kampala. We normally recommend an arrival night before starting a long road safari, especially after an overnight international flight.

Passport and Uganda Visa Requirements for U.S. Citizens

American passport holders require a visa to enter Uganda and should apply before travelling through Uganda’s official electronic visa system. Your passport should have at least six months of validity beyond your arrival date and at least one blank page for the entry stamp.

When applying, travellers may be asked for documents such as:

  • A clear copy of the passport information page
  • A recent passport photograph
  • A yellow fever vaccination certificate
  • Travel plans or a safari itinerary
  • Accommodation details
  • A return or onward air ticket

Use only the official Government of Uganda visa portal: Uganda Electronic Visa and Permit Application System. Requirements and fees may change, so confirm the latest instructions before submitting an application. Ngoni Safaris offers complimentary visa-application guidance to clients who book their safari with us; the final decision remains with Uganda’s immigration authorities.

Travellers visiting Uganda, Rwanda and Kenya on the same trip may also investigate whether the East African Tourist Visa is suitable for their itinerary and intended first point of entry.

Vaccinations and Health Preparation

Arrange a travel-health appointment preferably four to six weeks before departure. The CDC currently recommends yellow fever vaccination for travellers aged nine months and older and reports that Uganda requires proof of vaccination for arriving travellers aged one year and older. The CDC also recommends prescription malaria-prevention medicine for travel throughout Uganda. Your healthcare professional can advise you about routine vaccinations and other possible recommendations, including hepatitis A, typhoid and rabies, based on your health and itinerary.

Pack insect repellent, sunscreen, any prescription medication in its original packaging and a small personal first-aid kit. Comprehensive travel insurance should include overseas medical treatment, medical evacuation, trip interruption and cancellation protection.

Important current-travel notice

Travel conditions can change quickly. As checked on 17 September 2026, the U.S. Department of State lists Uganda at Level 4—Do Not Travel, citing crime, health, terrorism and unrest, including current Ebola-related restrictions. The CDC also carries Uganda-specific Ebola and return-screening information for U.S. travellers. Before making final arrangements, review the latest U.S. Department of State Uganda advisory and CDC Uganda traveller guidance, consult your doctor and insurer, and decide whether and when to travel based on the most current official advice.

When Is the Best Time to Visit Uganda?

Uganda is a year-round destination, but the drier periods—generally June to September and December to February—are popular for gorilla trekking and wildlife viewing. Trails are often easier to navigate and animals may gather around water sources.

The wetter seasons, commonly around March to May and October to November, bring greener landscapes, dramatic skies and excellent photography. Rain can occur at any time, particularly in forest and mountain regions, so a lightweight rain jacket is useful throughout the year.

Gorilla and chimpanzee permits are limited. Travellers planning to visit during popular holiday periods should reserve well in advance.

Unmissable Places for American Travellers

Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

Bwindi is home to mountain gorillas and offers one of the world’s most moving wildlife experiences. After a guided forest trek, visitors spend a regulated period observing a habituated gorilla family. Ngoni Safaris arranges permits, accommodation and transfers as part of a complete itinerary.

Queen Elizabeth National Park

This diverse park combines savannah game drives with a boat safari on the Kazinga Channel. Visitors may see elephants, buffaloes, hippos, crocodiles, antelopes and many bird species. In southern Ishasha, there is also a chance to search for the park’s famous tree-climbing lions; wildlife sightings, however, can never be guaranteed.

Kibale Forest National Park

Known as Uganda’s primate capital, Kibale is celebrated for guided chimpanzee trekking. The forest also supports numerous monkey species, colourful birds and lush tropical vegetation.

Murchison Falls National Park

Uganda’s largest national park offers game drives, Nile boat cruises and views of the River Nile forcing its way through a narrow rocky gorge. Giraffes, elephants, lions, buffaloes, hippos and crocodiles are among the possible highlights.

Lake Mburo National Park

Conveniently positioned between Entebbe and southwestern Uganda, Lake Mburo is excellent for zebras, impalas and elands. Depending on current availability and park regulations, activities may include game drives, guided nature walks, cycling, horseback riding and boat trips.

Jinja and the River Nile

Jinja is a wonderful extension for travellers interested in relaxation and adventure. Activities may include white-water rafting, kayaking, boat excursions and riverside stays.

What to Pack for a Uganda Safari

Keep your safari clothing comfortable, practical and neutral in colour. A useful packing list includes:

  • Lightweight long-sleeved shirts and trousers
  • A waterproof jacket or poncho
  • Strong, broken-in hiking shoes for primate trekking
  • Gardening-style gloves for forest trails
  • A warm layer for cool mornings and high-altitude areas
  • A wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses and sunscreen
  • Insect repellent
  • Binoculars and a camera with spare batteries
  • A soft-sided travel bag for easy loading into safari vehicles
  • A Type G electrical adaptor; Uganda generally uses 240V power
  • Copies of your passport, visa, insurance and vaccination records

For domestic flights, baggage allowances may be lower than on international flights. We advise travellers to confirm limits before packing.

Money, Time and Communication

Uganda’s official currency is the Uganda shilling, although many safari services are quoted in U.S. dollars. Bring clean, undamaged, recent-design U.S. dollar notes, as older or marked bills may be rejected or exchanged at an unfavourable rate. Credit cards are accepted at many larger hotels and lodges, but cash remains useful for tips, crafts and small purchases.

Uganda uses East Africa Time, which is UTC+3 throughout the year. The time difference from the United States varies by time zone and daylight-saving season. Mobile coverage is available in most towns and many lodges, but service can be limited in remote national parks.

Responsible and Respectful Travel

Follow your ranger’s instructions during gorilla and chimpanzee trekking, maintain the required distance from wildlife and never feed animals. Ask permission before photographing people, avoid photographing military or security facilities and respect local customs. Drones require official permission and should not be brought or operated without prior authorisation.

Travelling with a responsible local operator supports Ugandan guides, lodge employees, conservation programmes, porters, craftspeople and communities connected to tourism.
