Where is Fort Murchison Lodge?
Fort Murchison stands on the Albert Nile just outside the northern boundary of Murchison Falls National Park, in the area formerly known as the Aswa Lolim Game Reserve. Its position suits visitors exploring the park’s northern safari circuit. Because the lodge lies outside the park, allow time for the drive to the entrance and check the day’s route with your guide when planning early activities.
The building draws inspiration from old river forts. Thick walls, locally crafted furnishings and a rooftop terrace give it a distinctive character, while the river setting keeps the safari close even after you return from a game drive.
Accommodation: rooms and explorer’s tents
Fort Murchison offers two ways to stay. The Luxury Rooms have solid walls, an en-suite bathroom with hot and cold water, and a private terrace facing the Albert Nile. King or twin beds are available.
The Explorer’s Tents provide a simpler safari experience. They stand on raised platforms beneath thatch, with beds, linen and a private terrace. Guests use a shared bathroom block a short walk away, with flush toilets and hot showers. When we prepare your itinerary, we will specify the room category so you know which bathroom arrangement is included.
Time to unwind beside the Nile
Between activities, guests can relax by the swimming pool or take in the view from the rooftop terrace. The riverbank is an inviting place to watch for birds, and hippos may be seen in the shallows. As with any wildlife sighting, their presence varies from day to day.
The terrace is especially appealing at sunset. After a morning on the plains or an afternoon boat safari, it offers a quiet place to reflect on the day before dinner.
What can you do from Fort Murchison?
A stay here can be part of a wider Murchison Falls itinerary. Popular activities include:
- Game drives: Explore the park in a safari vehicle with your guide, looking for elephants, giraffes, buffaloes, antelopes and predators.
- Nile boat safari: Cruise upstream towards the base of Murchison Falls and watch for wildlife and birds along the banks.
- Visit to the top of the falls: See the force of the Nile as it passes through the narrow gorge.
- Birdwatching: Look for species along the lodge’s riverside setting and on excursions in the park.
