5-Day Mount Elgon Wagagai Peak Trek
$ 1,500
This five-day Mount Elgon adventure takes you through the mountain’s changing landscapes to Wagagai Peak, the highest point of Mount Elgon. The Sasa Trail is the most direct route to the summit and offers an exciting combination of steep climbs, bamboo forest, heath and moorland, giant lobelias, waterfalls and sweeping views across eastern Uganda.
The itinerary includes an acclimatisation and preparation day before the main climb. It is best suited to travellers with good fitness who are comfortable with long trekking days and basic mountain camping.

Day 1: Kampala or Entebbe to Mbale and Budadiri
After breakfast, meet your Ngoni Safaris guide and travel east through Jinja and the towns of eastern Uganda to Mbale. Continue to Budadiri, the starting point for the Sasa Trail, on the slopes of Mount Elgon.
On arrival, meet the mountain guide and support team for a trek briefing, equipment check and preparation for the climb. If time and weather allow, enjoy a gentle walk around the foothills and nearby communities.

Day 2: Budadiri to Sasa River Camp
After an early breakfast, complete park registration and begin the ascent through farmland and local communities before entering Mount Elgon National Park. The trail climbs sharply through tropical forest and the famous Wall of Death section—a demanding staircase-like ascent that requires a steady pace.

Day 3: Sasa River Camp to Mude Cave Camp
Continue climbing as the forest gradually gives way to heath and afro-alpine vegetation. The landscape becomes more open, with giant lobelias, everlasting flowers and broad views over the valleys below.
The slower pace on this day helps the body adjust to the increasing altitude. Reach Mude Cave Camp in the afternoon, relax and prepare warm clothing, water and equipment for the summit attempt.
Trekking time: Approximately 4–6 hours
Accommodation: Camping at Mude Cave Camp
Meal plan: Breakfast, packed lunch and dinner
Day 4: Mude Cave Camp to Wagagai Peak and Return
Start before sunrise for the final ascent across the high-altitude moorland and the Mount Elgon caldera. The route is exposed and can be cold, windy, muddy or wet, depending on the season.
Reach Wagagai Peak at 4,321 metres, the highest point of Mount Elgon and one of Uganda’s most rewarding mountain viewpoints. Celebrate at the summit and take photographs before descending carefully to Mude Cave Camp for a well-earned meal and overnight rest.
